Bali is called the ‘island of the gods’ and has some amazing places to stay. Here’s our top 10 places to stay in Bali.

The Terraces

After a long flight of about 19 hours with 1 transit stop, we were really pleased to arrive in Bali and our first hotel, The Terraces Hotel in Kuta. Although it was the middle of the night, the staff were really friendly and gave us a nice room overlooking the pool, which is in the central court yard area of the hotel.

The hotel is conveniently located on one of the main streets leading to the beach. There are lots of bars, restaurants, and plenty of shopping to be had enroute to either the beach or one of the main high streets nearby.

Just down the road from the hotel, about a 10 minute walk, is a nice air con shopping mall with all the good high-street shops – useful if you forget something or need another bikini! We would recommend the café to the right as you enter the main entrance. They did the best eggs benedict!

Sens Hotel & Spa

This hotel is really lovely. It has excellent rooms with efficient air con, lovely staff, great food, and right in the heart of the busy centre of Ubud. It is so conveniently placed that I could walk to the local yoga shala – Radiantly Alive, as it was only around the corner, about a 5 minute walk, which meant I could get my yoga on every morning which was great.

Directly opposite the hotel is a temple which is nice to look around. The hotel is slap bang in the middle of everything, so a 5 minute walk in any direction and you come across lots of great shops and restaurants and places to have massages etc. All that Ubud has to offer is on your door step.

We walked the 40 minute walk to the monkey forest one afternoon – which is a great trip and has to be done. The monkeys live in a massive forest that isn’t enclosed so they can leave if they want to. They don’t though because they’re fed well and they’re looked after by the staff there. They’re used to tourists and love to sit on your shoulder for a photo in exchange for a banana. Don’t get too close to some of the big males though, they are known to chase you and try and pull your shorts down!

I also had a massage at the hotel which I would really recommend. It was pure luxury and I slept so well that night. One final recommendation would also be the hotel’s Balinese set menu. It’s a selection of the best traditional food served on a banana leaf and it was delicious.

Solo Villas Rice Field Retreat

Top 10 Places to Stay in Bali

This place has to be the most relaxing place I’ve ever stayed in. Situated amongst lush green rice paddy fields, which can only be accessed via a tiny track on a scooter, there is no noise except for the jungle noises of frogs, bats and birds that live near by.

We had such an amazing room/villa. It had the biggest bed big enough for 3 people, a living area with sofa and tv, a massive bathroom with huge marble bath tub and separate shower. There was also a kitchen area and table and chairs, so if you wanted to cook your own food, everything was there ready for you to use. We also had a private garden with double sun lounger and table/chairs over looking the rice paddy fields.

The rest of the complex is really beautiful and has a lovely pool with raised patio area and sun loungers. Breakfast is included in your stay and is really tasty.

Laurie, the owner, is a really friendly Canadian woman who set up the place about 2 years ago. She is always happy to help and organised a scooter for us which arrived within 10 minutes. She is also a fountain of knowledge when it comes to all things Bali and gave us a good recommendation for another Gili Island that isn’t so well known.

We cant recommend this place enough. It’s a truly peaceful paradise away from the hussle and bustle of Ubud but still really close to it – only 5 mins on the scooter. Plus the staff offered to drive us back and forth to Ubud any time we fancied a trip into town. Very generous and kind hosts. Come and stay here for sure!

FuramaXclusive Villas & Spa Ubud

Top 10 Places to Stay in Bali

FuramaXclusive Villas & Spa is an oasis of calm and class tucked away in rice paddy fields about 15 minutes outside of Ubud. We had an amazing villa with its own plunge pool that connected to one of the main pools. Our villa was really luxurious with its own outdoor lounge and seating area and huge bathroom and vanity space.

The site of the hotel is quite large with another big pool on the other side of the site from where our villa was.

This was where we had a romantic candle lit dinner for two which can be requested at an extra cost. We had our own personal waiter and a man playing local music to us. We felt very spoiled and looked after, and felt very full after the 5 course meal!

There’s an option to have breakfast served in your villa. We did this for Makai’s birthday which was during our stay there. It’s so nice being able to enjoy breakfast whilst chilling by your own private plunge pool!

Top 10 Places to Stay in Bali

The hotel also has an amazing spa with spa suite rooms looking out onto picturesque gardens. This was one of the most luxurious massages I have ever had, it lasted for about 2 hours and included a full body scrub, foot massage, body massage with oils and a flower bath. If you stay here its definitely something to treat yourself to.

The staff were so friendly and helpful and catered to our every need. At night they would come and turn down the beds and light scented oil burners to make the room smell nice and keep the mosquitos away.

The food, the cocktails, the staff, the pool – everything about this hotel was luxurious and we cannot recommend it highly enough. If you are planning a trip to Ubud then definitely stay here, you will love it! Check out our aerial videos and photos to get an idea of what to expect.

Bayshore Villas

This is a resort on the East coast of Bali in an area called Candidasa. It has a nice pool and access to the beach and sea. The food is nice at this place and one of the evenings we were there, they had some entertainment from local people who were dancing and performing for the guests which was fun to watch.

Top 10 Places to Stay in Bali

The place is also in a good location, quite close to the Virgin Beach which is a stretch of white sandy beach with restaurants and sun loungers, the sea was quite rough when we were there though so it was a bit tricky getting in and out. Worth a visit though if you are in the area. Near to this beach is the really beautiful Taman Ujung water temple that is definitely worth a visit. It has a slightly different look and feel to a lot of the other temples on the island, and has some wonderful gardens to wander around in.

Candi Beach Resort

This resort is thoughtfully designed and the grounds are stunning. It has smaller well appointed rooms near the main building, larger apartments and individual villas with their own garden and pool. We stayed in one of the individual vialls with private pool. All the gardens face in to the main grounds which sweep down to the main pool and private beach area.

Top 10 Places to Stay in Bali

We absolutely loved staying here. The rooms are stunning and have an excellent feng shui feel to them. The huge double bed looks out through floor to ceiling glass doors onto the pool and garden area, which is lush, with vegetation and palm leaf lined. The bathroom/vanity space is almost as big as the main room, and has a double shower area and bath with jaquizzi hot tub jets.

Top 10 Places to Stay in Bali

The main area of the hotel has much to offer, with 2 large main pools, 2 restaurants and a dive shop for all your snorkelling and diving needs. We took a boat trip from the hotel over to the ‘blue lagoon’ area just across the bay – this is the best area for snorkelling, and we saw many brightly coloured tropical fish there and some living coral too.

Top 10 Places to Stay in Bali

The staff were so attentive and keen for people to know about this much over looked or undiscovered area of bali for tourists and travellers. It remains a lot like bali used to be about 10-15 yrs ago, with mostly village life surrounding the few hotels that have popped up here. Its definatly a gem still to be discovered for the earnest traveller to bali. Especially this hotel which provides high class service amongst a beautiful setting. Its also a great stop to make if you plan to head out the Gili Islands, which was our next destination.

SAIA Villas  – Gili Air

Top 10 Places to Stay in Bali

I had long heard about the Gili islands and their beautiful remote atmosphere. Theres something about small island life that reveals the most relaxed part of your soul. I think what had always really drawn me was the fact there are no cars or motorised vehicles on the island. You either walk, cycle or take the local horse and cart taxi service.

This island is definitely one not to miss. It has some of the best snorkeling I have seen in many years, and we also saw four turtles during our time there which was an amazing site and refreshing to see such an abundance of them thriving in the environment there.

We had the pleasure of staying at SAIA Villas during our stay on the island, which are 3 private villas with pools run by 3 french ex pats who have lived on the island for a number of years. The villas were beautifully designed and decorated and the private plunge pool was a very welcomed treat on a hot day on the island.

I had always thought Gili Air was the quieter island of the 3 main Gili’s but it turns out its neighbor Gili Meno is actually the quieter one, sandwiched next door to the more party island of Gili Trangwan. We didn’t make it to that island but we did take part in a snorkeling trip and stopped on Gili Meno which was beautiful and very quiet- they say perfect for honeymooners. One important point to make here –Did you know If you stand on living coral it dies? I was surprised and saddened to see a lot of people during the snorkeling trip standing all over the beautiful coloured coral, ultimately killing it, and it takes many years just to grow a small section of coral. With so many of our reefs dying at an extraordinary rate its important to get this simple message out to people who might not be aware of this – pass it on!

The Pavilions Bali

Top 10 Places to Stay in Bali

This boutique resort is situated on the east coast of Bali in Sanur area. This side of the island has the advantage of great sunrises with a relatively quiet beach. Perfect for seeing in the day!

The hotel has a grand and beautiful bamboo tunnel entrance. We arrived at night time and drove down the striking driveway that was lined with candles – it was a great first impression. Our villa had its own pool and had lots of wonderful added features.

The Pavilions Bali is designed with original Balinese artefacts. Our villa featured woven organic fibre furnishings, a traditional thatched roof and a Balinese four poster canopy bed. The villa had its own lounge with dining/kitchen area and dark wooden floors throughout. Sliding bamboo doors led to our bedroom with a four poster bed and large bathroom area. Outside at the back of the bathroom area, is a little private garden with a sunken bath tub which was filled with flower petals – a perfect spot to soak under the stars.

We had the signature in-villa breakfast served by their Butler team (a nice touch) which was delicious. A great way to start the day!

Later in the day, we had a fabulous massage with the spa team which is very much recommended. The spa also has a yoga deck where you can book a private lesson or use their mats for your own practice.

Top 10 Places to Stay in Bali

One of the real highlights of our stay was a candlelit dinner at the Jahe restaurant, with a private gazebo in one of their gardens. The attention to detail was exquisite with candle lamps dotted around the middle of the garden and separate raised table areas so you felt you had your own space even if many people were dining at the same time. The food was first class and incredibly delicious.

Each villa had its own private pool and garden, but there was also a larger main pool if you felt like more of a swim or wanted to be more sociable.

Top 10 Places to Stay in Bali

Even though the hotel had a high occupancy whilst we were there, it felt very quiet and relaxed because most of the villas have their own pools, feeling almost like you had the place to yourself. If you want a quiet and relaxed getaway, with the hustle and bustle of Sanur and the beach on your door step, then this is your place!

The rooms are well equipped in a self catering villa style with full kitchen and dining area, so guests can cook their own meals if needed.

Breakfast is provided with the rooms and has 2 restaurants to choose from for food. The hotel is also conveniently placed near the busy Kuta area so there are plenty of shops, restaurants and bars etc to choose from.

The hotel is also very close to the southern tip of the peninsula of Bali, Uluwatu. Here you can visit Uluwatu Temple on the cliff edge and at 6pm every night they host a traditional Kecka Dance which is well worth seeing. Some of the characters in the performance were really engaging and funny and got some of the audience to participate.

Top 10 Places to Stay in Bali

There is also a traditional choir of about 50-70 men singing traditional songs, which had a very south pacific island feel to them. So although the performance was about a Hindu story of Hanuman and other Hindu characters, the singing reflected the small island life that is Bali.

We had a deluxe villa with a pool which also meant that we had access to the VIP lounge, it provides free tea, coffee, snacks all day, and a happy hour every day from 5-6pm which provides unlimited free alcohol and cocktails. This was a perfect setting to watch the sunset from.

The villa we had was really luxurious and met our every need. The staff were so friendly and accommodating. We were gifted sarongs on our bed which were really handy when using the pool and are a lovely reminder of the our time at the hotel. We can’t recommend this hotel enough, a touch of class and luxury but accessible to families and the busyness of Kuta.
